This thesis proposes four different types of the miniature antenna designs which are suitable for WLAN applications. The first design is about a planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) which operates at 2.4 GHz for mobile phone applications. No empty space is required for this design to reduce the waste of the circuit board. The thickness of the antenna substrate is only 1.6 mm but can still achieve good radiation efficiency. As for the second design, a monopole antenna with two branches suitable for dual-band WLAN operations is proposed to be embedded into various portable devices. The third antenna is designed to be mounted on the top edge of the laptop display panel for the dual-band WLAN applications. This design is an inverted-F antenna with three radiating strips and a shorting pin for adjusting the impedance. The last design is to be mounted along the side edge of the tablet computer for the dual-band WLAN operations. The above designs all have a compact size to be embedded in portable devices with good radiation performance. Those antennas are fabricated on the FR4 substrate to have a lower cost and can be easily embedded into wireless communication devices and laptop computers.
