In order to maintain a competitive edge and fight for survival, corporations need to continuously perform self-assessment of their business, make improvements and innovate. Standing still is not an option. Corporations need to be able to recognize emerging issues, analyze and address them, in order to assure stability and growth. Thus the subject of how corporations identify core problems through assessment, formulate resolutions to address the problems, and continuously improve and strengthen themselves as they face the current and future challenges, is an essential management topic.
This research examines the application of Theory of Constraint to helping corporations address the problems. Using the Information Technology (IT) Department within a corporation as the case study, this paper aims to illustrate how the assessment framework provided by the Theory of Constraint may be appropriately applied to identify and address the problems faced by the IT department. The analysis starts with business mission of the corporation and moves to focus on the current situation that the business is in. It also illustrates the application of System Dynamics principles to simulate the effect of the solution implementation. Through the case study, this research intends to develop and verify a tool that can be used by corporations to identify and address business problems that they may face.
Through the analysis of the case study, it has been found that Theory of Constraint and System Dynamics principles can be applied to identify business problems and solution analysis effectively. The core problems identified using the assessment framework of the Theory of Constraint are found to be closely resemble to those of the real situation. The solution analysis and implementation recommendation as a result of using the said theories have also proven that the said theories are indeed relevant tools that corporations can use to address business issues.
