In 1994 Shanghai Museum was able to purchase a set, consisted of 1,200 and more bamboo books from an antique market in Hong Kong. The books were later on analyzed and examined to be from the late-Warring State era in ancient China containing Chinese characters from the Chu State, from numerous calligraphers with various styles; The Book of Changes are included in《The root-character of Study on Chu-Dynasty Bamboo Slips of Warring States Collected by Shanghai Museum》Vol. 3. Its writings on the bamboo books were written by four calligraphers, each with its own style and fashion. As of silk books, the 100,000 more characters which were excavated from Mawangdui in Changsha, Hunan Province of China, an archeological gravesite from the Han Dynasty in 1973, and was calculated to be copied from between Qin Dynasty (221 B.C.) to Han Dynasty (168 B.C.). The silk books contained abundant content of various subjects, the main focus of this research paper, the Book of Changes belongs to the novel section. Based from the style of the characters, it should be written in the Han Dynasty with mature characteristics of Han’s Clerical Script. The purpose of this dissertation is by cutting through the angle of art, through the structure of the characters, the lines, the style in writings, and etc., to analyze and compare the differences between each calligraphy styles in the Book of Changes. Moreover, in doing so we will be able to understand the factual differences between each style and fashion of that era, then go above and beyond onto the stories behind the changes through years. It is known that with the limitations caused by the instruments may result “specialties” in different writing styles, hence the Book of Changes that was excavated from ancient Chu State, the effect of the Chu characters can easily be seen through the usage of rebus characters and the art of calligraphy. 【Key word】bamboo books, Book of Changes, The root-character of Study on Chu-Dynasty Bamboo Slips of Warring States, Mawangdui, silk books, rebus characters, the art of calligraphy, Chu characters.
