Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺灣藝術大學 === 音樂學系 === 100 === Liszt had written four compositions entitled《Mephisto Waltz》. The first, also the most famous, was dedicated to his beloved student, Carl Tausig(1841-1871). Being a literature enthusiast, Liszt had drawn his inspiration from the second episode of《Dance in the Village Inn: Mephisto Waltz》from Nikolaus Lenau’s(1802-1850)《Faust》, which was written in 1836. 《Mephisto Waltz, No.1》consists of Liszt's most well known compositional characteristics, such as thematic transformation, virtuosity, symphonizing and integration with literature. It is not only the most representative of the nineteenth century's program music, but also one of the most popular piano solo concert repertoire.
In terms of structural analysis, the emphasis will be made on the intervals, harmony and tonality. As for interpretation, the first part will be the comparison between the orchestra version, which Liszt had written as long as twenty years ago, with the piano version, in order to suggest its novelty in piano performance; the second part will combine the harmonic changes, structural sections with the poem, and furthermore provides methodology to administer challenging passages; the third and final part will focus on pedaling in order to make the most of tone color and acoustical range.
