Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺灣大學 === 中國文學研究所 === 100 === This study examines the city literature vision of the Hong Kong novelist, Kai-Cheung Dong, and analyze the unique vision of Dong as a global city novelist who has been under the impact of Globalism and Capitalism. And explain how is the influential of the city’s development appeared in his novel, and how is the urban regional phenomena from past to present relates with his narrative style as well as literature theme.
The thesis start from illustrating the Hong Kong’s history from the colonial period by British which has cause the essential politic agitation to Hong Kong. The Politic Reformation by British to Hong Kong had left a defining affect to Hong Kong’s future development especially the happening of Urban Revolutionary from the 90s which has lead to the disappearance of space in city. And the phenomenon left by the Capitalism broughts the local action to an new era and evokes the standing of Hong Kong Nativism Power. The variation of Hong Kong’s history in fact affected the development of Hong Kong’s literature , and this definitely affected the narrative style of Kai-Cheung Dong’s novel.
The following chapter is focusing on Dong’s unique narrative style. Kai-Cheung Dong is first known by his feminism writing but his“ city vision” and composition subject had totally took place in his novel soon after his award-wining《安卓珍尼》. He adopted an unique style of novel fabrication and has fully interpret the concept of “fiction”. And the purpose of his fiction style is to reveal the power of human’s imagination to help the Hongkist to create an opening view of perception instead of continuously trapped in the stagnant condition no matter is in politic or human development in Hong Kong.
Kai-Cheung Dong’s novel demonstrated the outstanding of materialistic. And Dong had fully converted the nature of “material”into his novel. Instead of writing or getting inspiration by“material”, Kai-Cheung Dong intends to “imitate” from those “material” that used to appeared in a city. There are “imitation”from the past vision of 《清明上河圖》,《東京夢華錄》as well as Bach Classical Music’s variation style and etc. found in Dong’s novel. The imitation of Dong was divided to the Form of Art and Artistic Spirit. From the numerous elaboration of art work such as Primavera of Botticelli and The Garden of Earthly Delights of Bosch in Dong’s novel, Kai-Cheung Dong has created his own style of narrating.
In addition, from the imitation from past, Kai-Cheung Dong created a brand new concept of time. The timeline in Dong’s novel has a circle movement and this is to break the continuously movement of linear time and created a“ loop” for the city that may revamp the unchangeable mistake which has cause the negative growing for the city’s development.
