It is aimed at discovering how these three Tachen settlements are different in terms of village development and residents’ economic and religious lifestyle by means of field study and literature review. Moreover, this study wishes to understand the original living environment of Loyal Tachenians, the history of Tachen retreat in 1955, and how Taiwan government helped them to settle down in Taitung. The study result is as follows: Taitung Loyal Tachenians were the people who used to live on the offshore islands near Zhejiang Province, China, including Yushan Island, Pishan Island, and Tachen Island. Since the place was surrounded by the sea and the soil was not fertile, people made a living mainly by fishing. When the Tachenians immigrated to Taitung, they were initially accommodated in guest houses until Tachen settlements were built up to be their permanent home. After the construction of Fugang, Pixing, and Pishan villages were completed in 1955 and 1956, the government allocated the houses in accordance with the scale of family members. Besides, it provided land and fishing boats to the residents of Fugang and Pixing villages and arranged the Tachenians living in Pishan Village to work as contract farmers for Taiwan Sugar Corporation. In the past five decades, these three Tachen settlements have lost a great number of residents. Since farming and fishing industries were in decline, many Tachenians were forced to get employed in Taipei and Kaohsiung. While they were moving out of the residence, their houses were either purchased or rented by Taiwanese people and the indigenous people. For the time being Fugang Village has the largest number of Tachenians, while Pishan Village has the least and most of its residents are middle-aged or old. Generally speaking, the development of Fugang Village is the best of the three. Since Pishan Village and Pixing Village are located in the countryside, residents tend to leave their hometown and to seek employment in big cities. In this case, the development of these two villages is sluggish. In other words, economic environment are the main cause affecting the development of Tachen settlements and religion is the element bringing Loyal Tachenians together in their daily life.
