－A Case study of a Child’s Creative Process

Abstract
In this retrospective analysis, a child’s literacy development which was between the ages of two and a half and twelve was investigated. A decade-long creative process from scribbling to picture book creating includes the following stages: parent-child book reading, story telling, scribbling, poetry writing, drawing, essay writing and picture book creating. Through the case study, the researcher interprets and discusses the implications of the child’s creation in each stage of the creative process.
The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter, introduction, illustrates the motivation of research and research questions. The second chapter discusses various aspects of children’s art and literacy creation through investigating relation between children’s literature and children, characteristics of picture books and data collected from questionnaires. It furthermore elaborates the growing history of the personal in this case study. The third chapter covers the initial literacy stage of the child in this case study. It explores the child’s language and art development from her scribbling, story telling, poetry, and drawing to understand the different processes of creative works between spoken and written languages. The fourth chapter analyzes the winning illustrated books which the child in this case study won in five consecutive years in the Love makes whole: Children’s illustrated book award hosted annually by Noordhoff Craniofacial Foundation. It discusses her play with words and the symbolic codes existed in her creative works of picture books and also explains how her creative works of picture books were associated with her life course. The final chapter, conclusion, compares the child’s current works of modern poetry and picture books with emphasis on educational implication.
The study shows that children’s creative processes are influenced by the experience of listening to stories and their reading environment as well. The more exposure of reading and having been read to, the better the performance is shown on their reading and writing activities. A child’s scribbling between ages three and five years old contribute to the cornerstone and foundation of the child’s ability to create picture books. Moreover, children's spontaneity keeps the creativity alive.
The researcher suggests and hopes to help parents and educators understand the importance of parent-child book reading and emphasizes on the significance of the precious developmental processes of children’s scribbling. Moreover, with the help of parents and teachers, children could be inspired to create their own art and literacy works.
