Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺北大學 === 犯罪學研究所 === 100 === The problem of juveniles’ usage of drugs is raising concerns by the public recently since it’s getting worse along time. The offenders often exercise neutralization skills in order to protect themselves from the image of delinquent and crime responsibility. This study employs Neutralization Theory to examine whether these young drug users neutralize their deviant behaviors. The subjects to be investigated are the juveniles’ in judicial state.
The findings show that the more times the juveniles were brought to those correction institutes, the more frequents they will exert neutralization skills. That is to say, the frequency they were sent to Taipei Juvenile Detention House is directly proportioned with the extent of drug neutralization. Juveniles in different states usually exercise different neutralization skills. For “general neutralization,” juveniles in Taipei Juvenile Detention House have the highest score, while those in Taiwan reform school get the highest score in narcotics neutralization.
Based on the analysis of drug-taking juveniles, the results show that personal properties and identity to the law have higher explanatory power upon “drug neutralization,” whereas family and school peers have less effect as the potential influential factors, which indicated that in the process of forming juveniles’ neutralization, personal characteristics have greater impact than the social environment does.
To sum up, the results demonstrate that drug-taking juveniles had perceived drugs diversely. In addition to launch “anti-drugs” campaign, we may need to strengthen juveniles’ identity to the law. On the other hand, within correction institutes, we may need to adopt diversified drug treatment, to provide more supportive services, and to increase guidance resources for completing the correction and guidance treatment in a more effective way.
