The Manila amendments to the STCW Convention and Code were adopted on 25 June 2010 by the IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee (MSC), making a major revision of the STCW Convention and to parts A and B of the STCW Code. Compared with the STCW Convention 2010 amendments, this study focuses on the maritime education of Taiwan marine universities to survey the current navigation courses and to suggest alternative. There are four viewpoints in this study. First, all discussions must be followed the STCW Convention 2010 version. Secondly, the specifications of marine simulators should be requested to meet the relevant regulations of the STCW Convention. Thirdly, present conditions and requirements of marine simulators in NTOU and NKMU. Finally, the analysis of navigation courses for maritime education. Both of marine universities in Taiwan, NTOU and NKMU, were outfitting with marine simulators which meet the STCW Convention regulations. Therefore, the current navigation education system should be corresponded with the STCW Convention 2010 version and program relative professional courses or training by using the marine simulators. The main purpose of the study is to enhance students’ practice skills or to obtain relevant professional certifications. As students possess compliance with the standands of competence as required by the STCW Convention 2010 amendments and achieve the requirements from marine corporations.
