Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺南大學 === 體育學系碩士班 === 100 === This qualitative study examined the development of performing diabolo in Kaohsiung City between 1964 and 2011. With visiting several interviewees who were good at this art as well as have much involved this sport during this period, this study attempted to understand the origin of performing diabolo and its development connecting with public school physical education and the public participation.
Mr. Ma Rong-Cyuan might be the first person who started diabolo art in Kaohsiung City. For better life, since 1964, he had performed the diabolo art and sold diabolos made by him in public spots during the Chinese New Year’s Holiday. Diabolo art was traditionally only a street vender’s from-hand-to-mouth business in China. In fact, diabolo art has been less popular until 1983.
Among Kaohsiung City’s public schools, Cisian Junior High School first valued and began to promote diabolo art in 1983. Supported then by the Kaohsiung City Government, many of public schools started to learn and develop diabolo art. The performing diabolo art school teams from Cisian Junior High School and Nanzih Primary School have kept outstanding performances in nationwide contests. Diabolo art has been particularly maintained and developed by Nanzih Primary School after winning to perform this traditional art overseas in an intense competition between public schools in Kaohsiung. However, diabolo art learning had been contemporarily declined along with the termination of Youth Folk Sports Group since 2001. After the effort of Diabolo Association Kaohsiung in 2007, diabolo art learning actually revived as well as established its organized foundation in the primary school.
Nearly no civilian organization had committed to the development of diabolo art learning until 2007. Diabolo Association Kaohsiung built in 2007 started the stage of societal participation in diabolo art learning. Although there will still be a long way to make this traditional civilian art popularagain in Kaohsiung City, the civilian team from Kaohsiung City began to participate in the diabolo sport of the Taiwan’s Domestic Sport Contest. In 2010, their brilliant performances won the third placement in the Female Team Competition and Female Individual Competition.
