By using a simple USB camera and three laser projectors, based on a simple geometric theorem, we can evaluate the distance between a target plane and the camera, we can also measure the angle of tilt of the plane. At first, incorporates three color laser projectors for generating three laser beams in parallel onto a distant plane under measurement. In the case that the plane is perpendicular to the camera’s axis line, pixel counts between any two laser spots in images taken at different photographing distances will be different. By identifying the positions of the laser-projected spots in images based on colors and intensity information, the pixel counts between the laser-projected spots can be calculated for measuring the distance between the plane and the USB camera. When the target plane is tilted, the shape formed by the three projected spots will be skewed. Angle of tilt of the plane can be estimated through simple geometric analysis. Experiment results have demonstrated that the proposed measuring method is more suitable for short distance measurement, may be applied to architectural sketch or indoor decoration.
