This study’s teaching subject was oxidation and combustion. The pilot study(N=30) conducted before the formal study(N=32), to modify the test items and teaching design. After the test items and teaching were revised that implemented in the formal study. The pilot study adopted quasi-experimental method that was one-group pretest-posttest design. The formal study adopted quasi-experimental method that was nonequivalent pretest-posttest design. Instruments in the pilot and the formal studies included pretest, posttest and retention test of scientific inquiry abilities and concepts. And statistic methods included paired-samples t-test and one-way ANCOVA. The qualitative data included activity worksheets, observations by cooperative teachers, interviews with the cooperative teachers and students, and teaching journals. The qualitative data were analyzed by triangulation to understand the thoughts of the students and cooperative teachers. The major findings of this study were:(1) the teaching design of CPS-SG was achieved, included 3 units and required 280 minutes to complete;(2) there were significant improvements on the scientific inquiry abilities and the concepts of oxidation and combustion;(3) students approved of CPS instructional model and considered it could develop the creativity;(4) the discussions between students were progressed during class. Finally, according to the results, this study proposed several suggestions on the teaching designs and implementation of science games as well as some directions for future research.
