The method of this research was content analysis. Social studies textbooks licensed by the Ministry of Education in 2000 were investigated, and the versions were Kuan Hsuan, Nan-I and Han Lin, all from volume one to eight, 24 volumes in total. The first thing was to research and refer to foreign and domestic documents and acquire expert advices in order to build up the analysis items of the research. Then according to the media literacy concept of items to make the quantification and the materialization analysis for social studies textbooks of elementary school. The results of the research are as the followings: 1.In comparison with various editions of social studies textbooks of elementary school, the edition of Nan-I presents the most times. 2.Social studies textbooks of elementary school pay the most attention to the main category of “media text”, and pay the least attention to the main category of “media organizations”. 3.Social studies textbooks of elementary school pay the most attention to the sub- category of “technology applications”, and pay the least attention to the sub-category of “production technology”. 4.The media literacy concepts in three editions of social studies textbooks of elementary school are all concentrated in the the eighth textbook, the second and the fifth textbooks are the least. 5.In the main category of “media text”, three editions all focus on “technology applications”. 6.In the main category of “media representation”, three editions all focus on “stereotype”. 7.In the main category of “audience”, three editions all focus on “reflection behavior”. 8.In the main category of “media organizations”, three editions pay the least attention, presents the number of times to be extremely few. 9.In the main category of “media access”, Kuan Hsuan and Han Lin focus on “rights of civil” sub-category; Nan-I focus on “rights of portrait and right of privacy” sub-category. Based on the results of this study, some suggestions were proposed as a reference for social studies teachers, the editing ideas of social studies textbooks at elementary schools, and future researchers.
