The researcher introduced five Hakka creative ballads, as materials for teaching Hakka, to two 5th and 6th grade Hakka classes in elementary schools in Kaohsiung City. It was hoped that students, through listening to and comprehending these ballads, could understand and speak Hakka. It was also hoped that students, through this learning process, could get to know about Hakka music, and accept, respect, and enjoy Hakka culture. The research methods employed in this study are literature review, participatory observation, and interview. This research analyzed students’ Hakka test results, interviews, and teachers’ teaching diaries, and the conclusions are the following: 1. How well students learn Hakka depends on whether the environments provided by the schools are conducive to learning Hakka. 2. Students whose parents are Hakka enjoyed Hakka ballads more than their counterparts whose parents are not Hakka. Parents’ ethnicities had no bearing on students’ test results. 3. Students who liked ballad lessons enjoyed Hakka ballads more and scored higher on Hakka tests than those who didn’t like the lessons. 4. Overall, ballad lessons were well received by students, which promotes students’ identifying with and enjoying Hakka culture. 5. The lesson of “Sparkling Light” was best liked by students. 6. Overall, females students in both schools liked the ballads more and scored higher on the Hakka tests than did their male counterparts in the same school. 7. Students’ learning attitudes toward and the extent to which they devoted to the lessons are most determinant of their learning effectiveness. Recommendations for Department of Education, Hakka Affairs Council, news media and stations, schools, and teachers were offered. Directions for future research were also offered. 林淑鈴 2012 學位論文 ; thesis 213 zh-TW
