Abstract
What is transpersonal self? Is it that ignoring others’ judgments and doing what you want to do? Transpersonal self is the pure joy of relaxation people occasionally feel when appreciating the beauty of nature, when gazing at a flower, a tree, when concentrating on swimming or dancing. In order to last the impermanent experience of transpersonal self to every aspect of daily life, we need to have better understanding of transpersonal self and to put it into practice. The thoughts of Zhuang-zi are those of transpersonal self. This paper tries to further understand the meaning of transpersonal self through the thoughts of Zhuang-zi and hopes the thought of transpersonal life of Zhuang-zi’s can be realized in life education.
There are five chapters in this paper. Chapter one is the introduction, illustrating the research background, motivation, scope and method as well as the structure, purpose and the restriction of the research. Surpassing one’s ego is what chapter two focuses on. First section is to interpret and analyze the classifications of one’s ego defined by Mou Zongsan, Lao Szekwang and Fang Dongmei. Subsequently discussed is how to proceed self-surpassing via seven points: surpassing the limitation of human flesh, surpassing the paranoid of life and death, surpassing personal desire, surpassing psychological emotion, surpassing prejudice of right and wrong, surpassing object gap, and surpassing the constraint of morality. Knowing the value of transpersonal self is discussed in the following chapter, starting with understanding “true” from Zhuang-zi’s view to what kind of status it would be when people have reached transpersonal self. Then the discussion will focus on the ideal characters from Zhuang-zi’s perspective: extraordinary beings, miraculous beings, saints and true beings. The fourth chapter will talk about the practice on achieving transpersonal self, first focusing on the practice of “fasting of the mind” and “sitting in forgetfulness”, and followed by the practice of “dao” and “shu”. The fifth chapter is the conclusion and proposals on Zhuang-zi’s thought. In order to bring Zhuang-zi’s thought of transpersonal self into life education, there will be proposals aiming on this, in the hope to bring about the experience of everlasting happiness and joy by realizing the meaning of “Human and Self”, “Human and the Others”, “Human and the Society”, “Human and Nature” and “Human and the Universe”.
