Assessing safety culture in Petrochemical turnkey companies

碩士 === 國立高雄第一科技大學 === 環境與安全衛生工程研究所 === 100 === Petrochemical turnkey contractors are engineering companies that perform design, procurement, construction and pre-commissioning for engineering projects in the petrochemical industry. The numbers of occupational injuries are higher than other industries because of highly dangerous tasks involved and high personnel mobility. To reduce numbers of occupational injuries and to improve safety performance and employees’ confidence, it is desired to know how the employees of those companies think about the safety and the occupational safety management practice. A questionnaire containing 67 questions in 16 categories was first developed, and a survey of 254 employees in four companies was conducted. Reliability, validity, ANOVA, and radar diagrams were conducted using SPSS. The results showed that the average score is 70.61% on a 100% scale, which was in the range of 61-77% in previous studies in manufactory industries. The five categories that scored less than 70% were emergency response, procurement management, safety communication, employee participation and continuous improvement. Two companies that established TOSHMS definitely scored higher than other two companies. The study found that establishing TOSHMS definitely improved the confidence of the employees toward the safety and the company’s safety management practice. To improve the current safety practice, the management of petrochemical turnkey contractors are suggested to improve the five categories that score lower than 70%.
