After the introduction of principle of erbium doped fiber laser(EDFL). Lastly it will discuss the structures and results of the experiments. The experiments not only compare a variety of different structures of fiber lasers with their output power, side mode suppression ratio (SMSR), transfer efficiency and the difference between forward pump and backward pump in the fixed length of erbium doped fiber and pump power but also compare the distinction of output power between when using circulator in linear cavity with broadband fiber reflector (BFR) as mirror, finding out which structures of fiber lasers have the best performances, at the same time, it discusses the effect of reflectivity of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) to output power. Under the fixed pump wavelength 980nm and pump power 100mW, and the erbium doped fiber is fixed length 4m, the best output power and transfer efficiency is backward pump linear EDFL using a FBR as laser-cavity, it is 13.31dBm and 25.57%, because the one way pump remain about 10%~30% energy, on the other hand which means it only absorbs 70%~90% energy. By using the way of backward pump, it can gain better output power from newly absorbability of erbium doped fiber. The best of side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) is ring cavity EDFL, it achieves 61.43dB. From the above-mentioned result in the experiments, this paper successfully compares linear fiber and ring cavity EDFL individual output characteristic and advantages when they are in the same conditions.
