However, due to limited studies of trade between Japan and Taiwan, to reach a high level of overall understanding on their trade relations has become an uneasy task. Furthermore, the rise of China economy in recent years certainly shows gigantic influence on Taiwan. The trade relations between China and Taiwan should also be studied and discussed in depth. The main topic of this thesis is to understand the trade intensity between Taiwan and its major partners – Japan and China, and to find out, within the trade, on which industrial sectors Taiwan sustains competitive advantage. In this thesis, analysis was done on trade structure change among Taiwan, Japan, and China, through the use of Japanese Ministry of Economy “RIETI-TID2011” database which integrate thirteen National Industrial Classification, “Trade Intensity Index (TII)”, “Trade Specialization Coefficient (TSC)”, and import and export data of year 2002 to 2010, after Taiwan joined WTO. The result has shown Taiwan has a strong trade relationship with both Japan and China. In addition, within the thirteen industries, only three of them Taiwan has slight competitive advantage over Japan. As for against China, there are seven industries shows competitive advantages. But only three out of the seven show great competitive advantages. In general, after Taiwan joined WTO, the long existed situation of Taiwan having unfavorable balance of trade with Japan was not improved. Ironically, a higher trade deficit has occurred; imports far exceed exports. On the contrary, Taiwan showed a significant export growth to China. Taiwan''s competitiveness in Chinese market is expected to increase after signing of ECFA. Chin-ping Chen 陳志坪 2012 學位論文 ; thesis 106
