If the assessment result reveals that the product needs improvement, the engineer has to assemble the original designer or other engineers to discuss the solutions. The discussion and improvement could waste a lot of time and even cause more damage. Therefore, an immediate and on-demand computer environmental assessment tool during 3-D modeling would be conducive to new product development. The purpose of this research was to introduce an environmental computer assessment tool into computer aided product design. Due to the “Carbon Emission” issue, a new computer tool “Carbon Footprint Calculator with SolidWorks (CFCS)” was developed with the Application Programming Interface (API) technique. The CFCS can assist a designer to monitor his new developing parts or products. The designer can directly obtain the carbon footprint information of a part or a product through inputting several data about the manufacture, transportation, usage, recycling and disposal during constructing his 3-D computer aided design (CAD) model in SolidWorks. The CFCS specifically aimed electric products and their compositions, including printed circuit boards (PCBs), electric components, and display modules. The CFCS was successfully illustrated with a real monitor design case, and the author considered that it will be conducive to sustainable product design.
