Many studies have shown that firms may benefit technologically from international business and foreign direct investment (FDI). FDI is undertaken by firms that possess specific advantages to overcome the disadvantages of doing business abroad. The tradeoff between the advantages and disadvantages leads to different FDI strategies and technology scouring. While outward FDI has significant involvement with the markets, it may expose firms to and promotes its acquisition of different types of technology knowledge. In this study, we aim to explore what sources of technology information that FDI firms can choose, what determinant may effect firm’s sourcing of acquire technology information and whether various sources of technology information would induce different spillover on firms who involve in FDI activities. Using the survey of foreign investment in manufacturing published by Taiwan Ministry Economic Affairs during 2007, an attempt has been made to understand, with the help of cross tabulations and maximum likelihood estimation of the treatment effect model, the differences in technological strategies adopted by FDI firms and their determinants. The empirical results show that technology capability, social network, business type and firm characteristic are determinants of FDI firms’ technology sourcing including internal information, external information and mixed information. Finally, we discover that if firms adopt external information benefit to their operation scale. Further, mixed information contribute to their technical level and employment effect.
