With such an experience, the colonialism and the cruelty of the Pacific War can be comprehended through some of his works, especially in《Return Alive》, which has more specific details about the Pacific War in the writing. Chen Chien Wu emphasized that 《Return Alive》was his life story, which was real in most of the book and also fiction in it. He tried to reveal how much damage and harm Japan had brought about in the Pacific War in《Return Alive》and talked more about the issues of anti-war and anti-colonialism. The thesis adopted literature analysis, induction analysis, text analysis, comparative study, and Chen Chien Wu’s important events in his life. In the thesis, motivation and purpose , research methods, and previous research were summarized in Chapter One. In Chapter Two, Chen Chien Wu’s literature accomplishments could be understood by investigating his background and his writing process. Chapter Three described what Taiwanese had gone through during the Japanese occupation and Taiwanese resistance against Japan. Chapter Four pointed to the special elements in literature, such as the symbol of the sun totem and the implications of the dense forest. Chapter Five pointed to the accomplishments of 《Return Alive》. Chen Chien Wu, as well as Lin Heng Tai, was one of the members in the poetry club named Bamboo Hat. Both the writers, who belonged to the generation between two languages, once tried very hard to learn Chinese, so the writing styles between them would be compared. Chapter Six concluded what type of historical meaning and emotions 《Return Alive》tried to show us. Ya-lian Lin 林葉連 2012 學位論文 ; thesis 117 zh-TW
