The purposes of this study were:
1. To investigate elementary school teachers’ aesthetic experience of new generation art in Taiwan.
2. To investigate elementary school teachers’ aesthetics and understanding of “SuperGeneration@Taiwan” exhibition.
The methods of data collection used in this study included literature analysis, questionnaire and interviews. The main results were as follows:
1. Elementary teachers’ aesthetic experiences for the new generation artworks in Taiwan
1.1 An investigation of elementary teachers’ aesthetic experiences
i. Teachers with background in arts are more likely to accept artworks in different mediums and forms than their counterparts with other backgrounds.
ii. Teachers with background in arts have higher artistic sensitivity and better observation ability than their counterparts with other backgrounds.
iii. Teachers with background in arts increase their professional knowledge in arts substantially more than their counterparts with other backgrounds.
iv. The art types appreciated by teachers from other backgrounds may be limited to certain genres since they only visit exhibitions halls for art viewing.
1.2 An investigation of elementary teachers’ aesthetic perception for the new generation artworks in Taiwan
i. Teachers with background in arts have higher sensitivity and observation ability to the new generation artworks while they appear to have more visual opinions and can make comments for advantages and disadvantages.
ii. Teachers with background in arts are more capable of interpreting the new generation artworks from the multi-faceted perspective and capturing the symbolic meaning.
iii. Teachers with background in arts could comprehend and appraise the new generation artworks while teachers from other backgrounds tend to interpret artworks by associating their personal life experiences.
iv. Teachers with background in arts could accept the integration of new generation artworks into their teaching with an open mind whereas teachers from other backgrounds hold conservative attitudes toward this integration.
v. Both teachers with background in arts or otherwise agree that children need guidance and instructions when viewing the new generation artworks; moreover, they also agree that it is more suitable for senior grade children. New generation artworks may enhance their art appreciation ability.
2. An investigation of elementary teachers’ appreciative perspective for the exhibition— “SuperGeneration@Taiwan”
2.1 The visual perceptions of teachers from different professional backgrounds
i. At the initial observation, teachers with background in arts would use their appreciation ability to understand the artworks from the perspective of multi-faceted symbols and forms.
ii. At the initial observation, teachers from other backgrounds establish their opinions based on the form of the artwork.
2.2 The opinions of applying artworks in teaching of teachers from different professional backgrounds
i. Both teachers with background in arts or otherwise agree that new generation artworks are better applied in the course of art appreciation for senior grade students.
ii. Both teachers with background in arts or otherwise think that the theme of cartoons, comics, and online games is more suitable for elementary students.
iii. Both teachers with background in arts or otherwise think that the installation art of simple images which reflect life is suitable for elementary students.
iv. Teachers with background in arts have higher acceptance for the application of multimedia visual art in teaching whereas teachers from other backgrounds are more restrained in applying different art mediums.
