The definition of self construct was the positive attitude and a sense of familiarity toward self and others. Also, counselor construct meant one's positive attitude and the sense of familiarity toward counselors. The role expectations of counseling was defined as degree of one's expectation of self involvement, facilitating conditions counselor provided, and counselor's expertness in counseling process. All 134 participants in this study were college or graduate school students in Taiwan. 57 of them were or had been in counseling, and 77 of them never attended to before the research. Instruments adapt were Kelly's(1955) Repository Grids Technique (RGT) and Tinsley's(1982) Expectations About Counseling-Brief Form (EAC-B) which were translated to Chinese version by Yuan(2009). Analysis methods were: (1) structural equation modeling (SEM) was applied to test causal relationships between self construct, counselor construct, and the role expectation of counseling; (2) cluster analysis was applied to assign groups according to the responses of self construct, and group differences were tested by MONOVA; (3) as the same way, cluster analysis was applied to assign groups according to the responses of counselor construct, group differences in counselor construct and role expectation of counseling were tested by MONOVA. Results indicated that: (1) one's positive attitude and the sense of familiarity toward self and others would affect the sense of familiarity with counselor; (2) one's positive attitude and the sense of familiarity toward counselor would affect the expectation of self and counselor. (3) the results of SEM showed the direct effect of .33 from self construct toward counselor construct. Besides, the direct effect from counselor construct toward role expectation of counseling was .37. Both of path coefficients were statistically significant. (4) participants had no experiences of counseling expected more counselor's expertness than client group. It might imply that client group's expectations were more realistic than non-client group.
