Antioxidants as a nutritional regime are greatly reported in protecting against exercise-induced ROS generation, which can contribute to decrease oxidative damage. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of Ixora parviflora (IPE) treatment on oxidative stress and antioxidant defenses after a single bout of exhaustive swimming in mice. Fifty-six male C57BL/6 mice (6-week-old) were randomly divided into six groups: (1) control (C, n=10) ; (2) exercise (E, n =10); (3) E+RL (10 mg/kg of resveratrol , n=6); (4) E+IL (10 mg/kg of IPE, n=10); (5) E+IM (50 mg/kg of IPE, n=10); (6) E+IH (100 mg/kg of IPE, n=10). The results indicate that the E+IH group significantly inhibited NADPH oxidase expression, and increased in SOD enzyme activity and protein expression of liver tissues post exhaustive exercise; and increased in GPx and GRD enzymes activity of liver tissues post exhaustive exercise. Moreover, the activity of plasma creatine kinase (CK), a marker of muscular damage, was significantly decreased in the E+IM and E+IH groups than E group post exhaustive exercise. Based on the present results, we suggest that exercise pretreated with 100 mg/kg of IPE before exercising can attenuate exhaustive exercise-induced oxidative damage and increase antioxidant enzymes activity - in vivo.
