Summary: | 碩士 === 國立成功大學 === 光電科學與工程學系 === 100 === In this thesis, we mainly investigate the capabilities of electrically tunable polarization converters with liquid crystals (LCs) and specially designed electrodes in the cells. The devices are homogeneous LC cells with in-plane electrodes on the bottom glass substrates. When applying various voltages in the cells, axially symmetric electrical fields are built in LC layers, which possibly force the occurrence of LC reorientation to form symmetrical distribution and finally achieve radial polarization converters. We study the physical parameters to affect the performance of radial polarization converters including cell thickness, operation modes, and so on. Simultaneously, we combine two different types of polarization converters to study global electro-optical performance. From study results, we conclude that different modes of polarization converters can be achieved with various cell thicknesses. If the cell specification can be carefully designed by simulation study, tunable multi-mode polarization converters will be realized in the future.
