The sampling sites included 13 rivers, different treatment units of an industrial wastewater treatment plant (WTP), and the receiving river of treated effluent from the industrial park. The results of bioassay analysis showed that the water samples of AGD River and the tributaries of YS River and GP River exhibited high estrogenic activities in wet seasons. Other river water samples and the suspended solids (SS) samples of ER River and AGD River showed significant estrogenic activities in dry seasons. However, no significant androgenic activities were detected in samples collected at dry or wet seasons. In addition, the estrogenicity of WTP effluent decreased significantly after wastewater treatment. The results of LC-MS/MS analysis showed that high concentrations of BPA (32 ng/L~725.3 μg/L and 7 ng/L~9.7 μg/L) and NP (nd~4.9 μg/L and nd~795 ng/L) were detected in the river water and SS samples, especially in ER River. Moreover, higher concentrations of E1, E2 and E3 were detected in GP River (nd~831 ng/L), and EE2 (nd~51 ng/L) were only detected at few sites. Comparing the results of bioassay and instrumental analysis, it’s obvious that there still exist unknown estrogenic compounds in the rivers, thus further identification of unknown estrogenic compounds is necessary.
