Trees, despite their biological age, survive only on healthy root system as roots absorb water and mineral, enabling al the metabolism activities within a tree The purpose of this study is to investigate the root distribution of giant camphor trees in Taichung Houli, using of non-destructive way. Four observations of roots were recorded: 1) large root at abnormal size, decaying and adventitious roots grows near the trunk flares were caused by the secondary growth after they were injured by external forces 2) fine roots spread and grow under the aeration brick 3) research pits with poor drainage have lesser roots 4) when the pits went deeper, roots grow upward directing to the soil surface. Under this study, the root with excessive size are of random, medium to large roots with the inverted U-shape root distribution is caused by the soil mound up before these trees were planted. Distribution of fine roots is concentrated at the soil depth of 5-25 cm to the deepest 100 cm. Roots were categorized by a) less than 0.5cm diameter b) 0.5 ≦ - ≦ 5.0 cm diameter c) combination of root a) and b). Kriging analysis forecast the root distribution. Type a) roots tend to grow to the north areas, followed by the southwest side near the trunk flare. Root b) growth in all positions, with majority at North and the South. 劉東啟 2012 學位論文 ; thesis 138 zh-TW |

The purpose of this study is to investigate the root distribution of giant camphor trees in Taichung Houli, using of non-destructive way.

Distribution of fine roots is concentrated at the soil depth of 5-25 cm to the deepest 100 cm.
