Several well-known quality maps are investigated and compared. In this work, a newly developed quality map concept is proposed and it is proved that its performance is not worse, even better than the well-known ones’. The gamma transform is utilized previous to the phase derivative variance operation to mask out the background. With the benefits of less processing time and better image contrast, the structured light projecting experiment is practically applied on samples of a fan, a shoe and a computer mouse to reconstruct their 3D profiles and the proposed quality map is proved to be effective in identifying the real discontinuities.
