Currently, the driving devices used by electric bicycle are mostly brushless DC motors. When conventional way is used to drive a brushless DC motor, due to the errors of the inductance value of the stator winding, the placement location of the rotor position sensor, or due to other factor such as the noise issue in signal processing, phase delay phenomenon could be generated on the judgment of the rotor location signal. Hence, when brushless DC motor is in operation, as the rotational speed is increased, its current phase could lag the Back-EMF of the motor, hence, during the phase commutation period, current instability and unsmooth output torque could usually be the result, in the mean time, the energy conversion efficiency could also be reduced. Therefore, in this article, inverter is controlled so that the driven voltage will follow the rotational speed to adjust the phase to lead that of the Back-EMF of the motor. In this paper, experimental result comparison will be made between conventional drive method and the proposed phase advancing switching method, meanwhile, the developed driver will be installed on the bicycle body to perform real road test, and the road test result is sure to prove the feasibility of the adopted method. Also, the implemented drive can meet the Safety Test Standards of Taiwan Electric Assisted Bicycle and Electric Bicycle.
