When patients and their primary caregivers face unexpected surgery and anesthesia, the uncertainty may arise. Preoperative health education and postoperative visits may allow the primary caregiver to alleviate the uncertainty in the correct manner. Methods: This article was aimed to explore caregivers' coping strategies for patient during postoperative period and relative factors of their coping strategies. This cross-sectional design recruited 325 caregivers of patients from neurosurgery, plastic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, orthopedics and obstetrics and gynecology ward in a medical center in Kaohsiung city during February 21 to May 01, 2012. We collected data including demographic, disease-related character, uncertainty in illness and coping strategy by questionnaire. Caregivers’ uncertainty was measured by the translated questionnaires originally developed by Mishel. Caregivers’ coping strategy was obtained by the translated questionnaires originally developed by Jalowiec. Statistical analysis was carried out by the software SPSS 17.0 version. Analytical methods included percentage, mean, standard deviation, t test, one-way ANOVA analysis, Scheffe 'post-test, Pearson correlation and multiple regression. Results: The results depicted that: (1) complex feelings was dominated in uncertainty in illness. (2) problem-oriented strategies were dominated in the coping strategies. (3) uncertainty in illness was correlated to coping strategies. (4) Overall coping strategies was often used in caregivers with supports sharing the responsibilities and monthly family income of 60-100 thousands. The predictability of total variance of overall coping strategies was 22%. (5) The emotion-oriented coping strategies was more frequently used in female caregivers and those of monthly income of 60-100 thousands. The predictability of total variance of emotion-oriented coping strategies was 22%. (6) The problem-oriented coping strategies were frequently used in caregivers with supports sharing responsibilities and of university level of education. The predictability of total variance of problem-oriented coping strategy was 15%. Conclusions: The higher the uncertainty in illness, the more use of both emotion-oriented and problem-oriented coping strategies. The study suggests that health providers can offer preoperative and postoperative nursing instruction and health education CD to alleviate uncertainty of caregivers.
