Some vocabularies changed into polysemous words by increasing many meanings. For example, two verbs which uses the hand to do an action, Japanese “打つ(Utsu)” and Chinese “打(Da3)”, are polysemous words. There are nearly fifty definitions about “打つ(Utsu)” in Japanese dictionary. And there are nearly thirty-five definitions about “打(Da3)” in Chinese dictionary. Though we can see that the dictionary lists all definitions, we still don’t understand the relationship among those definitions. Besides, the dictionary could not include the newest meanings and usages. Therefore, this thesis studies Japanese “打つ(Utsu)” and Chinese “打(Da3)” by using the theory of cognitive linguistics to analyze the situation of semantic extension about this two action verbs. Firstly, to know the modern usages of “打つ(Utsu)” and “打(Da3)”, collecting definitions and example sentences about “打つ(Utsu)” and “打(Da3)” in several dictionaries. Then, making a comparison list is to find out what are the main meanings in the present day. Secondly, to analyze the example sentences come from corpus or news through the concepts of cognitive linguistics (metaphor and metonymy and synecdoche). Thirdly, plotting a polysemy network illustration is to present the relationship among those definitions. So, we can comprehend the situation of semantic extension about this two action verbs. Finally, comparing the usages of “打つ(Utsu)” and “打(Da3)” to grasp similarities and dissimilarities between this two action verbs. Fong-Chi Tsai 蔡豐琪 2012 學位論文 ; thesis 126
