碩士 === 銘傳大學 === 應用中國文學系碩士班 === 100 === The Buddha Speaks The Ullambana Sutra” (Phật thuyết kinh Vu Lan Bồn) is one of the classic of Buddhism for filial piety promotion. It plays a very important role and have great influences on the later generation. The “Ullambana Festival”（Lễ hội Vu Lan）was preached to teach the sons and daughters repay their parents and save their parents out of Reincarnation. Furthermore, the image of Maudgalyayana rescuing his mother from the underworld became a model for filial piety which in “The Buddha Speaks The Ullambana Sutra”. Since “The Buddha Speaks The Ullambana Sutra” was carried from India to China and translated to Chinese, it spreads rapidly and massively. In the process, East Asia countries, including Japan, Korea and Vietnam are affected by piety thought. Through Bian-wen, Bao-juan and opera propagandize filial piety in sutra , the Maudgalyayana story began spread. Today, the Ullambana Festival turns into an important festival among East Asia countries. The general introduction, research methodology and literature review are interpreted in the first chapter. In the second chapter, the development of “The Buddha Speaks The Ullambana Sutra” in Vietnam is elaborated. The meaning in the sutra which focuses on filial piety and the development of filial piety are discussed in the fourth and fifth chapter respectively. In the final chapter of this study, it comes to the conclusion. We hope people can be inspired and know how important to practice the filial piety by this study.
