In recent years, because of the fast development of rural tourism and ecological engineering, some authors have begun to conduct research related to these issues. One of the main purposes of rehabilitating irrigation canals by eco-engineering method is to provide recreational space for the local community residents. Therefore, this study is aimed at investigating and analyzing the usage of this eco-engineering irrigation canal and its leisure benefits for local communities, using Shin-Ying branch of Chia-Nan canal as a case study. This study was conducted by using the method of observation, interviews and questionnaires. The result of site observation showed that the users of Shin-Ying Branch green space are mostly female and middle aged, and the main use type can be categorized into walking, exercising, resting and chatting, playing and walking the dogs. In the interview, the interviewees were mainly administrators of this place, who were also the residents of local communities. They said one could find users in this place anytime of the day, and the use types were similar to the site observed. Some community activities were sometimes held in this place, such as Mid-Autumn Festival barbecue. The interview results revealed that the more significant leisure benefits of this space were psychological, economic and environmental benefits. The respondents of questionnaire survey were mainly the residents at the age above 50 living in Da-Hong village, Shin-Ying district. Most of them were housewives. As for the aspect of leisure and recreation characteristics, more than half of the respondents liked doing exercise in this place; and there were no significant concentrated distributions in other characteristics. Based on the result of factor analysis, the leisure benefits were classified into personal and social benefits. According to the results of difference-analysis, the elderly residents perceived more social benefits than the others, and the residents, who used this place on a daily basis, perceived the higher benefits overall. Finally, this study also makes several management suggestions for the related administration and the follow-up study. Wen-Pin Lin Hung-Cheng Chang 林妏嬪 張宏政 2012 學位論文 ; thesis 109 zh-TW
