However, clinical occupational therapists might suffer emotional labor and job burnout those result from providing the patients intensive service. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore relationships between the occupational therapists’ personality traits, emotional labor, job burnout and workplace situations. The study also investigates the tendency of the personality traits and load of emotional labor on job burnout. This study used a design of cross-sectional study, adopted a structured questionnaire to collect data during May to September in 2011. Using occupational therapists as research targets, we collected 500 questionnaires, 412 valid cases. Results of this study showed that emotional exhaustion, none part-time had higher tendency than part-time (p<0.05), it had positive correlated to neuroticism and the deep emotional acting, but negative related to extraversion and both had significant impact. In low personal accomplishment area, female, junior, single, none part-time, junior and low wage had higher tendency than others (p<0.05~0.01), and was positive correlated to neuroticism, but extraversion, conscientiousness and the basic emotional expression was negative correlated and both had significant impact. Depersonalization, the therapists of practice place in central Taiwan than who were in eastern Taiwan (p<0.05), was positive correlated to neuroticism and emotional diversity, but to agreeableness and basic emotional expression was negative correlated and both had significant impact. This study suggests that in the personal, occupational therapists should develop own adaptation and emotional stability to strengthen the ability to resist stress, in order to avoid personality traits tendency to neuroticism. They should participate in educational training and enhance professional ability, be aware of the advantages and limitations of oneself, especially for junior therapists. A reasonable and equitable management mechanism should be provided by hospitals. It can effectively reduce job burnout and improve the quality of rehabilitation.
