Moreover, the safety of collagen extracted from cattle, pigs or other terrestrial animals has been questioned in recent years, therefore an alternative extraction source is one of the priority in research and development. This study employed collagen which is rich in fish scale to replace the current use of terrestrial animal collagen, and combine with biomedical ceramic (artificial bone) to prepare a new composite material for bone filling. As traditional biomedical ceramic bone fill material must be sintered into lumps, bone defects must be trimmed before implantation, but this will cause secondary injury, and the problem of bone defect may not be completely sealed remained. Therefore, this study used sodium alginate 1% mixed with the fish-scale collagen peptide / biomedical ceramics to prepare particles. The form of particle has the advantages of excellent surface area to volume ratio and well diffusion behavior, it was hoped that this composite materials can be smoothly filled into the bone defect without any trimming. The assessment of this composite materials used in bone fill was performed via X-ray imaging on 3 and 6 months post operation on animal model, and the results showed that this composite material was able to improve bone repair, indicating the potential of fish scale collagen peptide combined with artificial bone to be served as bony filling material.
