Initially, it was thought that myofibroblasts develop from the differentiation of resident parenchymal fibroblasts in response to profibrotic cytokines, such as transforming growth factor-β. Transforming growth factor 1 (TGF-β1) has been identified as the main inducer of EMT in kidney and lung diseases including IPF and COPD.
