Description
Summary:碩士 === 玄奘大學 === 應用心理學系碩士在職專班 === 100 === The aim of this present study is to examine the effects of Zen meditation on self-actualization and well-being. It adopts a qualitative methodology. Data were collected by semi-structured interviews with four individuals with more than six years of meditation experience. This study used the coding procedures in the grounded theory approach for data analysis. The present results indicated as the following. Firstly, in regard to psychological and physiological aspects of the interviewees, Zen meditation promotes immunity, calms moods and manages emotions, increases life efficiency and work productivity, and maintains physical and mental self-adjustment and thus self-affirmation. Secondly, regarding the outlook on life, a change in attitude toward life is most apparent as life is no longer meaningless, work is no longer a pain, and the meaning of life is manifested. Thirdly, in respect to self-actualization and well-being, the course of meditation is divided into three lengthy stages: before, during and after. Reflections on meditation include: meditation is not a cure-all; it does not change concepts, and it must be accompanied by other activities. The research also offers suggestions for further research and recommended practice based on the results.
