With the growth of mobile devices, the video sharing websites, like YouTube, increases the variety of live videos. Under such circumstances, are people becoming more like reporters or paparazzis? The study inquires into the relationship between video sharing website and citizen journalism, especially taking live video on YouTube as example.
By conducting in-depth interview with 4 live-video uploaders, 2 PeoPo citizen journalists and 2 citizen journalism scholars, supplemented by secondary analysis, we discover the norm to prevent paparazzi disaster and some evidences about citizen journalism. This research proves video sharing website can take citizen journalism to the next level, based on the following four reasons: first, YouTube is a mainstream website with the power of influence. Second, the motivation of live video uploader includes "seeking justice” as well as "self-help ". Third, there is an emergence of internet norms of defending injustice. Finally, video sharing website is a broad definition of citizen journalism.
The study shows that web 2.0 really inspires people to have the right to report news. As upcoming the era of web 3.0, the study considers that presentation of citizen journalism is not only just in-depth reporting, but also a photo, a piece of video or a simple narrative all can regard as news.
