One of the problems is that some students do not cherish the opportunity to study in universities and are less motivated to learn. On the other hands, most college and university students are very interested in the use of Internet. According to a survey from the Ministry of Education, the college and university students in our country spent 22.45 hours a week on the Internet on average. Among the vast amount of web sites, Facebook is one of the most popular social networking sites. Therefore, one of the goals of this study is to investigate whether learning motivation of students will be increased by the Facebook learning activities designed in this study. By announcing peer competition messages on Facebook, the study investigated whether students were motivated to spend more time on learning. In an experiment, the subjects were required to use two versions of English vocabulary learning systems, one on the ordinary web pages and the other on Facebook. The experiment was to find out whether differences exist in the learning performance and learning motivation of the subjects when different versions of systems were used. The subjects were 21 freshmen from the same class. These subjects served as the web version and the Facebook version at different stages of the experiment. The major findings of this study are: The frequency of system usage in the web version was significantly higher than that in the Facebook version. No significant differences in learning motivation were found in using the two versions of the systems. However, students learning with the Facebook version outperformed students learning with the ordinary web version. 林繼任 陳信助 2012 學位論文 ; thesis 61 zh-TW
