Utilizing the method of questionnaire survey and the “Chart of Factors that Encourage or Discourage Elementary School Students’ PE Participation” devised by the researcher, 700 sixth graders in Daya District, Taichung City, were selected via convenience sampling, and 673 valid samples were extracted. According to the statistical analysis, the results are shown as below: 1. The most significant factor that encourages elementary school students’ PE participation is the need for the sense of achievement, followed by the need for growth, interpersonal relationships, and the fun of sports, with rewards being least significant. 2. The most significant factor that discourages elementary school students’ PE participation is academic-related, followed by physical abilities, the environment and hardware, and interpersonal issues. 3. In terms of gender, male students are more motivated to participate than female students, and male students face fewer hindering factors than the female counterparts. 4. Whether a student participates in the school team makes a significant difference; those who participate in school teams are more motivated and face fewer hindering factors. 5. The seniority of school-team participation makes a significant difference in the sense that those with a longer seniority are more motivated and have fewer hindering factors. 6. The level of academic performance shows no significant difference in this regard. 7. Elementary school students who are more motivated to participate in PE have significantly fewer hindering factors. Lastly, the findings were summarized and discussed to provide several suggestions for education-related authorities, schools and future researchers. ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to discuss the factors that encourage or discourage elementary school students’ participation in physical education courses. According to the statistical analysis, the results are shown as below:
