In the study, crushed concrete aggregate from the poles was used as substitute of natural coarse aggregate to prepare specimens for the laboratory testing program with major parameters as the following: (1) water/cement ratio (w/c ratio): 0.7, and (2) percentage of aggregate substitution: 0%, 30%, 70%, and 100% Laboratory testing program in the study include: 7-day and 28-day compressive strength, workability, and abrasion resistance. Results of the study revealed that for the water/cement ratio used, 28-day compressive strength was about 53-65% of the standard concrete (without recycled aggregate used) for the concrete specimens with the recycled aggregate, while the 7-day compressive strength was 81-89% of the 28-day strength for the concrete with the recycled aggregate at the selected substitution percentages. Results of the study suggest that the substitution rate should be less than 30% to assure that the 28-day compression strength be at least about 60% of the concrete without using the recycled aggregate. The test results also indicate that the effects of aggregate substitution on the abrasion resistance were insignificant while workability (fluidity) of the concrete mix was remarkably reduced by the increasing use of the recycled aggregate. The study concludes that the concrete mixed with the recycled aggregate in the study can be used in practice for some secondary structures and pipeline trench excavation bedding and pipeline supports. The use of the crushed power line poles as recycled aggregate can be very beneficial for the construction waste management programs by the Taiwan Power company and the environment protection purposes for the related public and private sectors in Taiwan.
