Department of Health announced that among the top ten leading causes of death in Taiwan in 2011, six is associated with metabolic syndrome. It’s known that the accumulation of visceral lipid due to hyperlipidemia is the main reason causing the metabolic syndrome and excessive accumulation of lipid in our body is also linked to obesity, so the development of drugs or natural extracts with no side effects to reduce lipid in liver or human body has become the aim of researches to prevent or cure metabolic syndrome and obesity currently. Gracilaria burse-pastoris, one kind of seaweed plants, is currently the largest domestic production of algae and which is one kind of red algae. Some clinical reports have confirmed that the red algae play a role in the regulation of lipid metabolism while the mechanism of regulation of lipid metabolism from Gracilaria is not very clear. So our study is aimed to find out how Gracilaria fresh products (GF) and Gracilaria dry ones (GD) work to reduce blood lipid and lipid deposition in obese animal models. By adding 10% corn oil and 0.2% cholesterol in animal model to induce animal obesity in a period of eight weeks, we observed the changes of liver functions (ALT and AST), blood lipid values (TCHO, TG, HDL, LDL) and measured the weights of liver, testis and peripheral adipose tissue of kidney in each experimental group. In our preliminary observation in this animal model, we can’t conclude that GF or GD has significant effectives in the inhibition production of blood lipid while 2% GF do make hamsters lose weight either in normal diet or high-fat and high-cholesterol diet, and 2% GF and GD do reduce the weights of the animal gonadal and of renal peripheral adipose tissue. According to our study results, 2% GF and GD play a role in adjusting metabolism and balancing body lipid to maintain body weight (or help to lose weight). Maybe it can be used as the natural botanic source to reduce lipid deposition and anti-obesity and to prevent or treat of metabolic syndrome in the future. 李彗禎 2012 學位論文 ; thesis 68 zh-TW |
