Instant messager is pervasive and popular after-school communication channel for junior high school students. The main purpose of this study is through the observation of instant messager usage to understand if the degrees of self- disclosure are different for junior high school stage students in virtual environment and real life and further explore the relationship between different attachment styles and self-disclosure.
In this study, questionnaire survey research method is used to study a sample of Taichung City junior high school students. There were 243 questionnaires sent out, 243 questionnaires received and 234 questionnaires are valid ones. Based on literatures, this study develops a questionnaire, “Junior high school student’s self-disclosure and attchment style on instant messager”. It includes three issues: self-disclosure, junior high school student’s attchment style, and instant messager user’s motivation. Descriptive statistics and Anova are used for data analysis.
The result indicates that instant messager is one of the online channel for junior high school students, although the average using time per day is not high. Analyzing how the junior high students in various offline disclosed groups (H, M and L) self- disclose online, we found that the students who disclose higher offline (group H) also behaves significantly better than group M and group L students who disclose online. When comparing attachment styles, security and anxiety attached junior high school students make easier online self-disclosure behavior than those who tend to avoid dependence. Besides, when it comes to the motivation of using instant messages, instant message users with higher motivation shows higher self-disclosure level online. Studies have also revealed that females tend to disclose significantly higher than males both online or offline. From personality traits perspective, extraversions demonstrate high self disclosure online or offline.
