Summary: | 博士 === 長庚大學 === 企業管理研究所博士班 === 100 === Emotional intelligence (EI) was found to be associated with one’s physical and mental health as well as coping to stress derived by emotional events. Many literatures have documented the measurement and validation of EI instruments, however a wildly accepted definition is lacking. In addition, few EI measurements were accepted so far to specifically apply to medical professionals. Therefore, this study aims to develop an EI measurement specific to medical professionals. Three stages were conducted in a medical center in Taiwan. In the first stage, critical incident method was performed to collect emotional incidents from 22 medical personnel. Subsequently, fourteen scenarios were emerged based on emotional incidents with which an open-ended questionnaire was developed and administered to 33 residents for collecting their recognition, emotions, and behavioral responses to those scenarios. In the second stage, scoring system was established by expert panel according to the responses in the first stage. Accordingly, anchor items for each scenario were formed through content analysis. A pilot study was conducted on another 21 resident-physicians. Finally, a well construct questionnaire including new EI scale, self-reported EI, personality, life satisfaction, positive affectivity, job satisfaction, turnover intention, burnout, career satisfaction, was administered separately into two periods. A total of 377 physicians were selected from representatively professional departments and 96 valid questionnaires were collected with a response rate of 25.46%. Simultaneously, 206 matching peers and 248 matching patients were recruited successfully to administer peer-rating EI and patient-rating patient-doctor relationship.
The new EI scale is proved to have acceptable reliability and validity.The major findings of this study are shown as follows:
1.Cronbach’s alphs of each study dimension, including single indicator, recognition, emotions, and behavioral response are 0.87, 0.75, 0.87, 0.65, respectively.
2.The result of confirmatory factor analysis indicates the new EI’s discriminant characteristics by comparing with big five personality (Chi-Square=35.75, RMSEA=0.049, NFI=0.94, GFI=0.97).
3.Incremental validity of new EI scale in predicting positive affectivity, job satisfaction, turnover intention, burnout after controlling for big five personality and physicians’ tenure is proven.
4.The new EI scale is significalty associated with patient-doctor relationship as demonstrated by significant association between patients’ loyalty and indicator of the new EI scale (p<0.05).
In conlusions, the new EI scale can be applied to future physician recruitment, on-job training, and medical education courses. Besides, the ability of detecting and managing patient’s emotions can be improved by physician’s on job training in EI. The issues of such EI management will become more and more important in future practice in health care settings.
