However, the users blocked by the shelter or at the edge of coverage range suffer from the poor signal quality which leads to low data rate. Thus, IEEE 802.16j has introduced the relay stations to help forward data. The relay stations can enhance the network throughput, extend the coverage range and low cost. So, deploying the relay stations can improve the drawbacks of the WiMAX. The locations the relay stations were deployed are different, the network performance are also different. Therefore, the relay station location planning is an important issue.
In this paper, we study the problem of the relay station location planning in multi-hop relay. Our goal is to deploy the minimum number of relay stations to serve all the users and connect to base station in multi-hop relay. We have to propose an efficient algorithm to solve this problem because this problem is belong to NP-complete. We propose two heuristic algorithms called RSL and ERSL including layer 1 and upper layer to solve this problem.
