Mathematics Story Books in Taiwan: A Pilot Study

碩士 === 國立雲林科技大學 === 應用外語系碩士班 === 99 === This study investigated mathematics story books related to mathematics curriculum of middle schools in Taiwan and categorized them into three learning stages based on suitability for various grade levels. The aim was to provide teachers with a guide for choosing these types of texts for their middle school students. The mathematics story books were searched from four kinds of resources available in Taiwan for this pilot study. After searching some school libraries and bookstores located in Yunlin County, Taichung City and southern locations in Taiwan, and some online bookstores, more than 80 mathematics story books related to mathematics for middle schools were selected. The books with the most useful and abundant contents were collected and put into a recommended book list. Except for the books of grade 10 students, all of the other books were placed into categories based on the Ministry of Education’s ability indexes for nine-year compulsory curriculum. The indexes can assist readers to find the books meeting their requirements more rapidly. This study suggests the application of story books to teaching and learning can be expanded to other subjects. Besides, the story books can start to be applied to elementary schools and extended to senior high schools and even to universities. Afterwards, teachers and students can benefit more from these developments and cooperate with each other to create more productive and efficient learning and teaching experiences.
