In addition, it is becoming a tread that using smartphones as portable navigation systems (PNSs). There are few researches in navigation system using portable devices and where experiments were executed in a real environment. Therefore, this study carried out field a series of experiments using a suitable recording device to measure driving performance and the findings provide more understanding about the behavior of using different navigation tools. The aim of Experiment 1 is to explore whether the efficiency to destination and driving behavior are distinguishable when using a paper map and PNS. Experiment 2 is designed to survey if the efficiency and driving performance are different as using a portable or an onboard navigation system. Experiment 3, a 2×2×2 factorial experiment, is conducted to examine how display ways, voice and position affect a user’s driving efficiency and action in different environments. Thirty-two subjects were paid to participate in this research, with field experiments being carried out in both urban and rural environments. A smartphone (2.7" screen) and driving support system we instructed (8.9" display interface) were adopted as the portable and vehicle navigation systems (VNSs) respectively. The results revealed that the drivers performed better when using a PNS compared to those using a paper map and VNS, in terms of efficiency to destination and driving performance. In addition, drivers could save time and gasoline using a PNS when in an unfamiliar region, and driving performance may be safer, despite the fact that the display screen of the phone is small. Moreover, the results indicated that position and voice instruction have significant influence in driving performance. Drivers using the PNS under the conditions up position and with voice instruction performed better in terms of trip duration, mean speed, and the standard deviation of speed. Therefore, it may be advantageous to use a PNS installed in a smartphone when a driver needs to arrive at a destination in an unfamiliar environment. The relevant works had been published in three journals, Accident Analysis and Prevention (SSCI), Journal of Navigation (SCI) and Safety Science (SCI). Bor-Wen Cheng 鄭博文 2011 學位論文 ; thesis 62 en_US
