Methods: Sixty middle-aged and elderly women were recruited from a senior community college and randomly divided into the experimental and the control groups. Twenty three participants, 8 from the experimental group and 15 from the control group dropped out during training sessions. Neck active range of motion (ROM) and maximal isometric strength in six directions, including flexion, extension, right and left lateral flexion, right and left rotation, were measured by MicroFET3 (Hoggan Health Industries, Utah, USA) before and after training. During 12 training sessions in 4 weeks, the experimental group practiced neck upright stability training, while the control group did a control exercise. The percentages of change in all parameters were compared between two groups by the independent t test (SPSS 12.0). The level was set at 0.05 and p<0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Results: The percentages of changes compared between two groups were significantly different in maximal isometric strength of all directions, but not in active ROM. Conclusion: Neck upright stability training may enhance neck muscle vii strength, but not flexibility. A neck training exercise can be re-prescribed and tried out for neck fitness.
