Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺南藝術大學 === 音像紀錄與影像維護研究所 === 99 === In this study, I try to explore the problems caused from livestock industrialization. Although the meat production in Taiwan is not as large-scale as western capitalist countries, but it’s approaching. In Taiwan, due to the highly demand for meat and crowded land use, we have no choice but to feed animals in such a “scientific” way to raise economic benefits. However, as the meat production is more and more intustrial, the way we treat animals is getting crueler. Besides, a lot of problems such as environment pollution are occurring, and at the same time humen’s health is threatened. All of the indication reminds us that we have to introspect the way we treat animals.
The construction of“Being”mainly follows the life of pigs: from boar auction, artificial insemination, sows pregnancy, piglets born, passing through the raising time which costs about six months, then pigs delivered to the auction market and slaughterhouse. Every process is not as simple as we think on the surface. On the contrary, the hidden meanings and the possible problems they may cause always surpass what we have realized and imaged.
The value of the documentary is that throughout images we could directly read the life of pigs. What we have to do for the time being is just to ababdon all the rational analize and incite the initiate perceptual conscience. At this thesis, I try to use words to assist what I can’t explain clearly in the dodumentary. The contents includes my personal experiences during the shooting and researches analysed by some experts related to the pig industry. By the cross validation of all the materials, we could piece up the present state of pig industry. It’s a summary but macroscopic understanding.
At Chapter 5(Field Observation and Analysis), I try to explain in divided theme: Boar Auction, Artificial Insemination, Delivery, Weaned and Growing, Pig Feeding and Medication, Excrements, Animal Corpse, Animal Transportation, Meat Pig Auction, Slaughter, The Rite of Workship in a Slaughter House at Chungyuan Festival. Every theme is discussed in different aepects. I have to say that it’ a hard work only by myselv’s effort. After all, pig industry nowadays involves a lot of professional knowledge. However it’s a try to joint and integrate Theory and Reality(or “Sense and Sensibility”). I attempt to mention that the production of the docunmentay is not merely from my personal affection immersion nor a self-righteous judgement. It’s undoubtedly a big disaster for animals and humen while the animal husbandry is getting more and more industrial.
