The purpose of this study is to explore the use of the open space, the users’ evaluation, and the gap between the designer’s idea and school practice. There were three research methods adopted in this study including questionnaires, interview and observation. Out of 250 samples from students and 65 samples from teaching staff, the valid rates are 96% and 100% respectively. The quantitative analyses were conducted by percentage statistics, descriptive statistics, t-test as well as one way analysis of variance. The qualitative data covering the information of direct observation and interviews with space designers and users were employed as supplementary explanations for the quantity results. The results revealed that teachers primarily use the open space on campus for teaching, and students use it mainly for chatting, resting and playing. In terms of the use of frequency, teachers are lower than students. Teachers and students tend to satisfy with the “Location Configuration”, "Planning and Design", "Ancillary Facilities and Equipment ", "Environmental Cleaning and Maintenance " of the open space on campus. On the whole they deem that the open space conforms to the planning principle. From the in-depth interviews, it indicates that the factors of the gap between ideal and reality are as follows: the shortage of space maintenance and management, teachers’ lack of familiarity with the space on campus, the lack of clear using rules and the measures of impetus, restricted funding and the uncertain school sites.
